Necessity is the Mother of Invention
The saying "necessity is the mother of invention" is absolutely true, and history indeed proves that great opportunities for entrepreneurs often emerge from crises. We are currently going through an exceptionally challenging phase that requires creativity to maintain our existence against any threats. Current developments are happening at a rapid pace and demand continuous innovation.
When we simplify the concept of innovation, we find that it is the process of developing new ideas, products, or services aimed at improving something that already exists and turning ideas into tangible realities that add value.
At Expo 2020 in Dubai, Germany presented a "Lake of Ideas" in its pavilion, featuring around 10,000 ideas across various fields. This exhibit illustrates the respect and appreciation for innovation in Germany. Contrary to the belief that innovation only emerges in favorable environments, it can be argued that a lack of resources and harsh conditions can be a significant driver of innovation. Germany and Japan after World War II serve as models for this.
National Innovation
By national innovation, I mean a rising wave of innovation, whether by individuals or the state itself. This concept refers to a country's ability to produce, adopt, and disseminate innovations in a way that contributes to economic development. It is simply the best way to emerge from national crises. We should never forget the remarkable individual initiatives in Gaza, which has witnessed extremely harsh wars and inhumane blockades. I believe these circumstances have been a significant motivator for launching many individual initiatives that have had a profound impact amidst this siege. For instance, Palestinian engineer Inas Al-Ghoul managed to create a desalination system that converts salty seawater into potable water using simple tools like wood, glass, and leather, successfully turning seawater into drinkable water.
Additionally, Taysir Obeid, along with his family of ten, managed to design a trench-like pit under his tent to provide a safe haven for his children from the ongoing Israeli bombardments in Gaza.
There are also ideas regarding generating fuel from plastic in Gaza, which is one of the innovative solutions to the chronic fuel crisis the region suffers due to the blockade and lack of resources. This approach relies on recycling plastic waste and converting it into fuel that can be used as an alternative to diesel and gasoline. There are many models and endless ideas.
Presenting innovations and successes serves as a nucleus that contributes to the development of society and achieving progress. To emphasize this, American researcher Barbara Fredrickson, a leading figure in positive psychology, proposed a model suggesting that positive emotions generate constructive ideas and behaviors, leading to continuous improvement in mental and emotional health. For example, when a person feels happy, they are more open to new experiences, enhancing their skills and ability to cope with stress, thereby increasing the chances of feeling happy again, creating a "upward spiral" of well-being.
This can also reflect on the economy, as the "upward spiral" model in economics suggests that innovation breeds innovation, and success breeds success. Improvements in investment, productivity, and consumption enhance the economy, which can further promote innovation, creating more economic opportunities and sustaining growth. For instance, when businesses thrive, employment increases, leading to higher income and consumer spending, which boosts demand for goods and services, and thus the cycle continues to rise. This can be applied in various other fields, not just in economics.
